LORRIC's Commitment to Nature: The Annual Arrival of the Black-Crowned Night Herons

At LORRIC, our dedication extends beyond developing and manufacturing the world's finest fluid and fluid monitoring products. As stewards of our planet, we place great emphasis on environmental conservation and related issues. Hence, alongside focusing on our products, LORRIC is committed to transforming our Yangmei, Taoyuan facility in Taiwan into an eco-friendly environment where clean air, natural flora, and fauna coexist harmoniously. LORRIC boasts proprietary wastewater treatment facilities and adheres to stringent standards for emissions control, consistently educating our team on the importance of environmental coexistence within our manufacturing practices.

The LORRIC Yangmei facility is not just a site for our buildings and manufacturing equipment; we have long committed to planting a variety of plants and trees. Moreover, our wastewater treatment technology ensures our wastewater ponds maintain clean water, supporting a thriving aquatic ecosystem. This pristine environment has led to a delightful discovery: every spring, the facility becomes a breeding ground for the Black-Crowned Night Heron, known locally as the "big clumsy bird."

The Black-faced Spoonbill breeds in Taiwan every spring, and its presence has been discovered at LORRIC's Yangmei facility.

The Black-Crowned Night Heron (Gorsachius melanolophus), also referred to as the Black-Crowned Pond Heron or Black-Crowned Tiger Heron, and sometimes affectionately called the "silly bird" or "big clumsy bird," is a medium-sized bird widespread across South, East, and Southeast Asia, breeding in areas including India, mainland China, Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippines. Standing at about 47 cm tall, these herons are forest dwellers, primarily nocturnal and known for their alarm posture of stretching their necks out long. During the breeding season, they can be heard causing a ruckus in the trees at night. Adults feature a black crown, with a reddish-brown face and neck, a dark reddish-brown back, striped abdomen, and black wings. Juveniles are grey-brown with black and white spots, and striped underneath.

Seeing the Black-Crowned Night Heron at our Yangmei facility year after year is more than just a nod to our environmental efforts; it's a tangible encouragement that surpasses any government or civil environmental certification. It's proof that our site is a suitable habitat for these herons to breed and nurture their next generation, a fact that brings us immense joy.

The founder of LORRIC installed anti-drop nets for the Black-crowned Night Herons.

To further protect these cherished visitors, after noticing incidents last year where heron chicks fell from their nests, potentially leading to fatalities, LORRIC's founder took action. Inspired by safety nets installed in buildings to prevent falls, we installed hemp rope safety nets between trees under the nests. This simple yet effective measure aims to enhance the survival rates of the heron chicks, ensuring that the Black-Crowned Night Herons can safely breed at our facility each year. LORRIC continues to improve our environmental standards, balancing revenue generation with our commitment to contributing positively to the planet's well-being.
