Solid Material Temperature and Sound Speed Reference Chart

Abstract

  • Temperature variations in liquids lead to changes in sound speed, impacting flow measurement accuracy.
  • The accuracy of ultrasonic flow meters is affected by changes in liquid temperature and sound speed.
  • Variations in chemical composition, pressure changes, and the formation of reaction products can also affect the sound speed in liquids.
  • This article compiles sound speed data for various liquids to help ultrasonic flow meter users improve the accuracy of flow measurements.

In this article, LORRIC compiles sound speed data for various solid materials from global professional units, listing the results of different units' measurements. The data on shear waves (commonly known as S-waves) and pressure waves (also called P-waves or longitudinal waves) are organized and compared. This enables users of ultrasonic flowmeters to make more accurate settings to achieve precise flow data.

1. Solid Sound Speed Influence on Ultrasonic Flow Measurement and Monitoring

Ultrasonic flowmeters primarily calculate flow based on the sound velocity (sound speed) of the liquid to be measured. In addition to this, factors such as the outer diameter of the pipeline, thickness, and material can also affect the flow data detected by the flowmeter. The difference in solid sound speed caused by the material of the piping has a significant impact on the transmission of ultrasound and the monitoring of flow.

If the manufacturing process of solid materials is stable and reliable, we consider it homogeneous. Environmental considerations include temperature and pressure, but in general, we mainly observe the relationship between material and temperature changes.
