How to Install an Ultrasonic Flow Meter? - The Importance of ToS and ToM in Correctly Selecting the Installation Location

Abstract

  • Ultrasonic flowmeters are categorized into Transit-Time and Doppler types. Transit-Time is best for clean fluids, while Doppler suits fluids with particles or bubbles.
  • Transit-Time meters offer high accuracy for various industrial uses, while Doppler meters are ideal for measuring turbid liquids.

In numerous industrial and scientific sectors, accurate liquid input is essential. Quantitative injection, a technique for controlling precise liquid amounts, is broadly applied in manufacturing, chemistry, medicine, and other areas requiring controlled liquid input. This article introduces the basic concept and application of quantitative injection and discusses the significance of flow meters in this context.

1. Before Discussing ToM and ToS, Let's Understand ToF

ToF, or Time-of-Flight, measures the time it takes for an object, particle, or wave (whether sound, electromagnetic, etc.) to travel a certain distance through a medium. This information can be used to establish time standards (like atomic fountains), measure speed or path length, or understand particle or medium properties (such as composition or flow rate). Objects in motion can be detected directly (e.g., through ion detectors in mass spectrometry) or indirectly (e.g., through light scattered from an object in laser Doppler velocimetry).

2. What Are ToM and ToS?

  • ToM (Time of Measurement): The actual flight time measured using instruments.
  • ToS (Theoretical Time of Flight): Calculated theoretical flight time, based on ultrasonic characteristics, fluid sound speed, pipe thickness, pipe material, and pipe inner diameter.
ToS is calculated from environmental parameters input by the user before installing the flow meter (pipe diameter, pipe material, sound speed, etc.), while ToM is used to determine if there is a significant discrepancy between actual numbers and theoretical values.

3. Necessity of ToM and ToS in Ultrasonic Flow Meter Installation

During the installation of ultrasonic flow meters, ToM and ToS can indicate "incorrect installation location" or "ToS calculation error." Ideally, ToM should equal ToS. Theoretically, the closer the ToM divided by ToS value is to "1," the more accurate the input parameters are, allowing the flow meter to operate more steadily and produce more precise measurements. If ToM and ToS differ by more than ±5%, the accuracy of the ultrasonic flow meter's measurement data should be considered. Moreover, if the ultrasonic flow meter is installed in different environments, other parameters still influence its installation location; hence, adjustments must be made based on the actual site conditions.
